Zircon Gemstones

Zircon The Natural Diamond Substitute

The name zircon is derived from the Arabic word 'zargun'. The Persian language has two words 'zar' and 'gun', these basically mean gold (zar) and color (gun). Just to clarify something here, not all zircon gems are golden or brown in color. Infact the best known application of zircon gemstones is as a diamond substitute, this obviously makes reference to white (colorless) zircon stones that can out glitter even the diamond.

The commercial world of gemstones is filled with confusing names and jargons. Some of these are intentional and others are not. Many jewelry buyers are confused with two gemstone names, one is zircon and the other is cubic zirconia also called CZ for short. Zircon is the gemstone that we discuss in this report, it is a natural stone mined from the earth. On the other hand, cubic zirconia is a synthetic factory made stone that is often used as a cheap diamond substitute. The casual gem or jewelry lover is often not able to distinguish the difference in names, this has done much to undermine the demand and popularity of zircon which is indeed a spectacular natural stone. Cubic zirconia the artificial stone also goes by the name of cubic zircon, cz, diamond simulant etc.

If you had to do a price comparison between CZ and Zircon, the artificial stone cz or cubic zirconia would be very much cheaper than the natural stone zircon. Another thing that you should keep in mind is that, natural stones will always have some inclusions or fissures, some visible to the naked eye and some visible only through a magnifying viewing instrument like a loupe. These natural occurences take place during the hundreds and thousands of years that it takes for a natural stone to be formed. The surrounding environment, climatic conditions, temperature changes and humidity take their toll on natural gems. On the other hand a synthetic imitaion like cubic zircon is produced under controlled conditions in a sterile environment, it can be made to be almost flawless.

Coming back to zircon, we will take a look at the approximate time when they were first formed on our planet. Scientists have concluded that the oldest mineral found on earth is indeed zircon. Some pieces date back to almost 4 billion years. It is probably about the same time that the phenomenon of crystallization started taking place on our planet. Though the stone made it's debut into the world of gems and jewelry after a few thousand years, the high profile origin of zircon makes it a hot collectors item.

Most of the zircon gems are found in pale colors like white or slight yellow to brown. Pale blue is another color that zircon gemstones are reported to be found. If you look at loose zircon gemstones in the gem markets, tempting colors like honey, bright blue and even red can be found. For this, credit needs to be given to gem heating treatments that have been developed and implemented for this gem stone. Remember the Arabic word 'zargun' that gave the gemstone the name zircon, it translated to 'gold color'. So rich yellowish brown zircon gems might have been once available in abundance, today similar colors are derived by heat treating lighter color zircon stones.

We spoke about zircon gems being used as diamond substitutes. White zircons obviously match the color of white diamonds and this can be said of other white stones like, danburite, white topaz or even white beryl. However zircon has one tremendous feature that makes it a preferred choice for diamond substitutes. If you have seen a nice white diamond, the glitter in the stone seems to burst out from the piece. This is technically brought about by a high refractive index, posessed by diamonds. Zircon does this bursting stunt better than a diamond, it kind of beats the diamond at it's own game. It is one of the few natural substances to have a refractive index that is higher than that of a diamond. This is one of the most important attributes that make zircon gems good substitutes for diamonds.

It is not surprising that most zircon gemstones are cut in the same way that diamonds are. This is true of both round and oval zircons in the size range of 2mm to 6mm. Loose zircon gems in larger sizes are often cut in the traditional 'flower' cut pattern. Octogon, square and even trillion are other shapes in which zircon can be custom cut. It is not often that you will come across cabachon cut zircon stones, such a cut would be wasting the power of the high refractive index posessed by the gem stone. You obviously need the right cut, facets and facet angles to bring out the 'fire' in a zircon gem.

The hardness of zircon is around 7.5 much higher than other popular gems used in jewelry. You can therefore set this stone in rings, pendants and earrings. If you care much for the fire and glitter of zircon, avoid very dark colored pieces. A deep color saturation seems to absorb most of the light and does not allow the stone to show it's glittering performance. To care for the gemstone, keep it away from physical impact and do not clean zircon gem stone jewelry in ultrasonic cleaners. Most zircon gems will appear much more expensive than they really are, so give them their due respect and you will get many years of satisfaction.

The Directstones online gem stone resource is maintained by Kaisilver, the world's leading online custom jewelry provider. This gem resource was initiated with two main objectives. The first and foremost was to educate gem and jewelry lovers regarding various issues related to gems. Almost no other gemstone provider cares to inform buyers on important issues related to gemstones. This is even more true when it comes to specific gem stone properties that the provider feels will keep gem buyers aware. Kaisilver has always been in informing and educating buyers, this allows them to make well informed decisions and is the best way to do business. Another objective of the Directstones gemstone project is to provide custom cut gems to small and even single stone buyers. This segment of the gem and jewelry sector is often ignored as sellers prefer to get big volume buyers. We will gladly cut even a single piece of any gem stone for you. We have not fixed any minimum order stipulation in terms of value or quantity.

Who Is Kaisilver?

Having established itself as the world's leading online custom jewelry provider, Kaisilver now extends it's merchandise line to include gems. While there is no shortage of gem stones in the global market, reliable sources for the retail buyer requirements are not many. Most retail gem dealers work with limited inventories, this reduces buyer options. Another problem with these small dealers is the lack of information and reliability when it comes to gem authenticity and value for money. Kaisilver with it's wide network of gemstone mining and manufacturing resources, is the best source for gems of all types, shapes, sizes and cuts. With a support team that is compromised of jewelry and gemstone experts, the advice and suggestions made by the team relate to your requirements and not to fixed sales targets. The website shows a small sampling of the gems that we offer. You can infact request for just about any gem on the globe. All gems are sourced directly from the source, closely inspected and then custom cut by our expert cutters. With a buyer base that includes fashion models, government officials, casino and resort owners, lawyers, financial experts, students and professors, doctors and surgeons, sportsmen and newsreaders we have become the preferred choice for quality gems and jewelry. By cutting out middlemen commissions and multiple agents, we provide great value for your money. Our large online operation does not stop us from welcoming even the smallest order. Gold and silver jewelry is custom made with equal attention to quality, material and craftsmanship. You can choose from our designs or send us detailed for the style and design that you need.

How To Order?

The process to order gems and custom jewelry at Kaisilver is similar. We do not expect you to make a rush purchase. We do wish that you take the time to discuss your requirements with our experts. They will be in a position to provide constructive suggestions that will guide you to make well informed buying decisions. Email all your requirements to sales@kaisilver.com provide as much inputs as possible to help us make relevant suggestions. For example if you are keen on getting a green gemstone but, are not particular about it being an emerald mention this in your email. Our gem experts might suggest a green tourmaline or even a peridot instead of an emerald. This suggestion would reduce our profit margins but will give you a gem that, is much cheaper and even more durable as compared to an emerald. When it comes to payments we offer some very suitable options. Paypal is the preferred form of payment, it is fair to the buyer and seller. The buyer when using paypal never needs to reveal credit card of bank information to the seller. We also accept direct bank transfers but prefer to do this on a case by case basis. When it comes to online transactions these days, both buyer and seller are afraid of frauds. It is quite possible that you do not feel comfortable working with us at Kaisilver. We sometimes feel a little uncomfortable with certain transactions too and prefer to keep away from them. There have always been fears of processing payments through Western Union money transfers. With the latest fraud reports, fake sellers and even fake buyers have been pulling off many online frauds using this mode of payment. At the same time we do understand that armed forces from the U.S who are stationed in various global positions sometimes have no other mode of payment besides Western Union. We therefore accept this mode of payment but at the same time, request you to avoid this mode if you do not feel comfortable using it. Shipping is done through FEDEX and you can expect a production lead time of around 4 to 5 weeks from the date of order confirmation and receipt of payment. Every jewel is fully custom made and requires the complete attention and concentration of highly skilled craftsmen. When it comes to gems, we could provide faster lead times and this can be discussed for each specific order.
